Pros

  • One of the most aesthetically pleasing themes available for Windows XP
  • Probably was originally developed by Microsoft, so compatibility issues will be minimal

Cons

  • Changes application title bars to a flat black color that many choose to customize to a different color after they have used the theme for a while

One of the most downloaded makeovers for Windows XP, the Royale theme provides for a more modern and muted environment that will refresh the look of your Windows XP computer.

Where did the Royale theme come from?

There has always been a bit of confusion regarding the number of themes that were known as Royale for Windows XP. The original Royale theme was developed for Windows XP Media Center Version. It was not known to be overly black in terms of color. It is said that when Microsoft developed the Royale theme, one of the also-rans that was not released was the Royale Noir theme, which was the same style of theme with black shading in the start menu and black title bars for open applications. Supposedly, the Royale Noir theme was then unofficially brought forward from Microsoft and began to circulate on the internet. It is this theme that is known as "Royale" today.

After the Royale theme was released, some fans created forks or variations and released them under various names.

How compatible is the theme with Windows XP?

As the Royale theme is said to have originated with Microsoft, there are very few complaints about how it integrates into existing Windows XP environments. The Royale theme has also consistently been one of the most popular theme downloads with those interested in making changes to the sometimes outdated look of their desktops. In look and feel, the theme is actually closer to what was available in later editions of Windows.

How do I install the theme?

To install the theme, just click Download and wait for the download to finish. Then click on the file and allow it to install. After the install has completed, open Windows control panel, click on Display and then navigate to the Themes tab. From the Themes tab, select the Royale theme and click OK.
